My Daily Ritual: How I Finally Beat Aches & Pains

Devon Burke • June 30, 2025

Tired of daily aches, stiffness, and tension? It's frustrating when your body feels constantly run down. I've been there, dealing with sore joints and slow mornings, and I've found that it's not one "magic" fix but rather consistent, small habits that make the biggest difference. At the core of my routine are a homemade tonic and a few key rituals.

dealing with back pain

Devon's Tonic Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 2 inches fresh turmeric – peeled & crushed
  • 3 inches fresh ginger – peeled & crushed
  • 2–3 cloves garlic – peeled & crushed
  • 20 whole cloves
  • 1 tsp hot sauce (preferably Jamaican hot pepper sauce)
  • 1.5 litres filtered water

Instructions:

  1. Add all ingredients to a large jug or bottle.
  2. Store in the fridge to maintain freshness.
  3. Shake well before each use, wait for it to settle, then pour and enjoy.

How to Take:

  • Drink 25–30 ml (approx. 2 tablespoons) morning & evening.
  • Or add 2 tablespoons to a herbal/hot tea.

Tip: Shake or stir well, then wait for it to settle before pouring.

2. Move a Little, Often

You don't need intense workouts. Gentle morning stretches, chair exercises, a park stroll, or some yoga can release tension and improve circulation. Even ten minutes of movement helps shift stiffness and stuck energy.

3. Prioritize Rest & Sleep

Quality sleep allows your body to heal and fight inflammation. I protect my rest with a calm evening routine: screens off, herbal tea (with a splash of the tonic), and dim lights. When I sleep well, I hurt less—it’s that simple.

4. Eat with Intention

Food can be medicine. I focus on eating more fruits, plants, fibre, good meat cuts, fish and fewer processed foods (though the odd breakout does not hurt!). I don't count or restrict; I just stay mindful of how food makes me feel. My focus is on nourishment, not punishment, which helps reduce stress on the body.

5. Get Regular Massage Therapy & Infrared Sauna Sessions

Massage therapy can feel like a luxury; but it's vital for loosening tight muscles and boosting lymphatic flow. Pairing it with FAR infrared sauna sessions multiplies the benefits. The sauna's gentle heat promotes detoxification, increases circulation, and eases chronic tension, especially after workouts or before a massage. After a sauna and massage combo, I feel like my whole system resets.

6. Listen to Your Body

Learn to tune in to your body's signals. Rest when needed, stretch when tight, and eat what you're truly craving (see point 4 above!). Your body knows; you just need to listen.

Final Thoughts

Managing aches and pains, particularly those from inflammation, doesn’t require a complete life overhaul. It's about consistent, small, intentional habits that accumulate over time to help gain more freedom of movement. Whether it's a daily tonic, gentle movement, regular massage, or a sauna session, investing in your well-being is worth it. Remember, holistic wellness also embraces your mental and spiritual health. Nurturing these aspects is just as crucial, for a life with less pain and more vitality.

Common Signs of Summer Fatigue Feeling tired despite longer days Heavy legs or swollen feet Poor sleep Headaches Low concentration Feeling hot and uncomfortable Tip: By the time you feel thirsty, your body is already starting to dehydrate. By May, things can start building up. Work, exams, life, pressure. Many people keep going, but the body and mind start to show signs first. Tight shoulders. Low energy. Poor sleep. A busy mind that does not quite switch off. Early Signs Your Body Is Overloaded Constant tiredness Neck and shoulder tension Headaches or jaw tightness Feeling mentally scattered Low patience Tip: Most people wait until burnout. The body and mind signal much earlier. Why It Builds in the Body and Mind Muscles stay slightly tense Breathing becomes shallow The nervous system stays switched on Thoughts keep cycling without pause Recovery time shortens What Helps Create small pauses - even five minutes is enough Release tension regularly Do not wait for pain - exercise is a good way to do this, get outside Breathe more deeply Slows the body and clears the mind - even one minute to Stop. As the weather improves, most people start moving more. Walking, gardening, lifting, getting things done. Then the aches start. Lower back pain, tight shoulders, stiff hips. It feels unexpected, but it is very common. Why This Happens After winter, the body is less conditioned than it feels. Then activity increases quickly. This leads to: Back pain after gardening or lifting Shoulder strain from reaching Sciatica flare ups Tight hips from walking more Tip: Sudden movement after a slower winter is a key trigger. Start slow. What Helps Build up gradually Start smaller than you think Warm up first Even a few minutes helps Keep moving Do not stop completely Release tension early Massage helps prevent small strains building Tip: If it lasts more than a few days, your body usually needs support, not just rest. If you are in SE23 or Forest Hill , get in touch to see how we can help. A Simple Reset Spring is a shift from rest to movement. Support your body now and it will move better throughout the season.

As winter fades, many expect energy to return quickly. But for many, the body still feels slow, posture has slipped and tension remains from months of reduced movement. March is the bridge between winter recovery and renewed energy.

Why the Body Feels Stiffer in Late Winter
By Karen Burke January 8, 2026
By January, many people are technically “better” but still feel flat. Energy is low, muscles feel tight, sleep is unsettled and motivation has not quite returned. This is common after winter colds and viruses. The body has been busy defending itself and recovery takes longer than most people expect. Why You Still Feel Tired After a Cold Even when symptoms pass, the body may still be: holding muscle tension running on low energy recovering immune strength dealing with poor circulation catching up on rest This can show up as stiffness, heaviness or a general lack of drive. Tip: Feeling tired does not mean you are unfit or failing. It means your body is still healing. What Helps the Body Recover Properly Warmth supports healing Heat helps muscles relax and improves circulation, which supports recovery. Gentle movement restores flow Light stretching and walking help the body regain rhythm without strain. Bodywork supports circulation and lymph flow Massage and hands-on therapies help release tension and support natural detox processes. Rest plus reset works better than rest alone The body recovers best when relaxation is combined with circulation and warmth. Tip: Focus on neck, shoulders and lower back first. These areas often hold tension during illness. January Is About Rebuilding, Not Pushing January is not the time to force energy back. It is a month for restoring it gradually. At MindBody Therapy Centre in Forest Hill , January is always about helping the body recover, reset and regain balance after winter strain. A Gentle Reminder If your body still feels heavy, stiff or tired, it is not lagging behind. It is asking for the final stage of care.

As temperatures drop and daylight shortens, the body goes through a seasonal shift. Muscles tighten, energy dips and aches become a little more noticeable than in summer. December is the perfect time to focus on comfort and mobility, so your body enters the new year feeling supported rather than strained. Why Winter Affects Your Muscles More Colder months can lead to: Tight neck and shoulders from hunching in the cold Lower back stiffness from sitting more indoors Reduced circulation causing aches and tension Sleep changes that affect recovery Mood dips from less daylight and less activity These small shifts can quickly stack up. Tip: Keep your neck and lower back warm when heading out. Scarves and layers help muscles stay relaxed. How Massage Supports Winter Wellbeing Body therapies offer winter specific benefits including: Looser muscles for better movement Improved circulation and warmth Reduced stiffness after long periods of sitting Better sleep and rest A lift in mood when daylight is limited Your body works harder in winter. Massage helps lighten the load. Tip: If you sit for work, set a reminder every hour to stand and stretch your arms overhead. It opens the chest and releases tension. Simple Daily Habits for Winter Comfort Try one or two of these each day: Walk outside in daylight when possible Shoulder and chest stretches after sitting Drink water often even when you do not feel thirsty Keep moving gently through your day Take a warm bath or shower before bed for muscle ease Small choices help your body stay flexible, warm and happy. Take care of your body this December. It is doing more than you think.
