Why October Is the Month Your Body Finally Asks for Help

Karen Burke • September 22, 2026

There is a particular kind of tiredness that arrives in October. Not the pleasant exhaustion of a busy summer but something slower and more accumulated. The shoulders that have been creeping upward since September...the lower back that protests after an hour at the desk. That general sense of carrying more than you should without quite being able to put it down or even put your finger on it.

Your body is not malfunctioning, it's responding to the season. Less light, more demands, a nervous system that has been running at a steady hum for months without a proper reset (enjoying all those wonderful summer events!). The good news is that this kind of tension is exactly what deep tissue massage is designed to address.

A note before we get into it

MindBody Therapy Centre has just been recognised with a 2026 Phorest Client Experience Award voted by our clients. Seventeen years in Forest Hill and your community continues to show up for us. We are grateful and we do not take it lightly.

Now, back to what deep tissue massage actually does

Deep tissue massage is one of the most misunderstood treatments we offer. Clients sometimes hesitate because they expect it to be painful, or assume it is only for athletes. In practice deep tissue work reaches the layers of muscle and connective tissue where chronic tension accumulates, the places a surface relaxation massage cannot access.

The pressure is firm but the work is precise. A skilled deep tissue therapist is not simply pressing hard. They are reading the tissue, following the tension and releasing patterns that have often been building for weeks or months. The result is relief that clients describe as feeling taller, looser and genuinely different in their body.

At MindBody Therapy Centre in Forest Hill, deep tissue massage is available in 60-minute (£70) and 90-minute (£95) sessions. Sports, remedial, Swedish and holistic massage all sit within the same price structure. Add an infrared sauna session for £5 off the standalone rate when booked together. Please call 020 3417 6108 to reserve your sauna slot.

Who it is for

Anyone who has been sitting more than usual. Anyone whose shoulders have not come down from around their ears since September. Anyone who carries stress in their body and has been meaning to do something about it. You do not need an injury to benefit from deep tissue work. You just need a body that has been doing its best for a while and deserves some attention.

We are proud to share that MindBody Therapy Centre has been recognised with a 2026 Phorest Client Experience Award. The award is given to therapy businesses that consistently deliver an outstanding client experience. To qualify, a centre must achieve an average client rating above four out of five stars, based on a minimum of 60 verified reviews submitted between March 2025 and February 2026. You cannot nominate yourself. You cannot buy your way in. The recognition comes directly from the people who have experienced your care. That is what makes this one matter. Seventeen years ago, Devon and Karen Burke opened MindBody Therapy Centre with a simple belief: that complementary healthcare should be accessible, professional and genuinely transformative. Since then, we have welcomed over 15,000 clients through our doors — people seeking relief from pain, stress and burnout, and people simply carving out time to invest in their own wellbeing. This award belongs to every client who trusted us with their health, and to every member of our team whose skill, warmth and professionalism creates the experience that people come back for. We are grateful and proud. If you have not yet visited us, we would love to welcome you. Summer was wonderful. Now it's your turn. Discover how MindBody Therapy Centre in Forest Hill SE23 can help you decompress, restore calm and head into autumn feeling like yourself again.
By Karen Burke • August 3, 2026
Most people get to August expecting to feel relaxed. Instead they find themselves lying in the sun still thinking about work, waking early despite the lie-ins, and feeling vaguely guilty for not enjoying it more (all of the above for me, except, since its my birthday month, I make sure I enjoy every single minute and a few sneaky July sessions as well!) This is more common than people realise. And it is not a mindset problem. It is a body problem. Why the Mind Struggles to Switch Off The nervous system does not automatically downshift just because the diary does. After months of pressure, the body stays in a low-level alert state, muscles slightly braced, breathing a little shallow, sleep lighter than it should be. You may feel tired but wired. Resting but not restored. Signs Your Body Hasn't Switched Off Yet Waking earlier than you need to Tension in the jaw, neck or shoulders even when sitting still Difficulty being present - mind drifting to what needs doing Feeling flat rather than genuinely relaxed Needing more sleep than usual but not feeling refreshed by it Tip: Check your jaw right now. Most people carry tension there without knowing it. Unclench, breathe out slowly, and notice the difference. What Actually Helps The body needs a physical signal that it is safe to let go. Rest alone does not always provide that, the nervous system needs something more direct. Move gently but consistently. A short walk, a swim, light stretching. Movement tells the nervous system the threat has passed. Use heat. Warmth — a bath, a sauna, the sun on your back — relaxes muscles and slows the stress response naturally. Get hands-on support. Massage directly stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system, the part responsible for rest and recovery. It is one of the most effective ways to shift the body out of tension and into genuine relaxation. Many clients tell us they sleep better after a single session than they have in months. (I see you - those who us who just 'pass out' in the actual session). Reduce decision-making. Decision fatigue keeps the mind active. Simplify your days during August - fewer choices, more routine, more space. Tip: The sauna at MindBody Therapy Centre is available to book as a standalone session or as part of our signature treatments. Even 30 minutes of heat does a significant amount of work on a tense body. Give Yourself Permission August is one month, the to-do list will still be there in September. The body, however, needs recovery now not later. If you are in Forest Hill or SE23 and your body still feels tense, heavy or wired despite the slower pace, we can help. Our treatments are designed specifically to support the nervous system, release held tension and help you feel genuinely restored. Not sure which treatment is right for you? Longer days and warmer weather should leave us feeling energised. Instead, many people feel tired, restless and uncomfortable. Hot weather places extra demands on the body, sleep can become disrupted, dehydration creeps in and muscles often feel heavier than usual. It is completely normal. Common Signs of Summer Fatigue Feeling tired despite longer days Heavy legs or swollen feet Poor sleep Headaches Low concentration Feeling hot and uncomfortable Tip: By the time you feel thirsty, your body is already starting to dehydrate. Drinking little and often helps more than large amounts all at once. Simple Ways to Feel Better Keep moving gently A short walk helps circulation more than sitting still. Choose lighter meals Fresh fruit, vegetables and protein are easier for the body to process in hot weather. Stay cool Cool showers, loose clothing and avoiding the hottest part of the day all help. Give your body time to recover Massage helps ease muscle tension, improve circulation and encourage deep relaxation, helping both body and mind feel lighter. Tip: Elevating your legs for ten minutes in the evening can help reduce feelings of heaviness after a hot day. Enjoy Summer Without Feeling Worn Out Summer should be about enjoying longer days, spending time with family and making the most of the sunshine. By May, things can start building up. Work, exams, life, pressure. Many people keep going, but the body and mind start to show signs first. Tight shoulders. Low energy. Poor sleep. A busy mind that does not quite switch off. Early Signs Your Body Is Overloaded Constant tiredness Neck and shoulder tension Headaches or jaw tightness Feeling mentally scattered Low patience Tip: Most people wait until burnout. The body and mind signal much earlier. Why It Builds in the Body and Mind Muscles stay slightly tense Breathing becomes shallow The nervous system stays switched on Thoughts keep cycling without pause Recovery time shortens What Helps Create small pauses - even five minutes is enough Release tension regularly Do not wait for pain - exercise is a good way to do this, get outside Breathe more deeply Slows the body and clears the mind - even one minute to Stop. Breathe. Reset (as it says in our book ' Building Life Muscles ') Use hands on support Massage helps shift built up tension and supports mental calm Tip: Check your shoulders and jaw right now. Most people are holding tension there without realising. Reach your arms up, then let a noise out as you drop them and your shoulders. Reset Before It Builds Further Small resets now, are easier than recovery later. Supporting both body and mind early helps you feel clearer, lighter and more in control. If you are in SE23 or Forest Hill, you can explore support with us .

As the weather improves, most people start moving more. Walking, gardening, lifting, getting things done. Then the aches start. Lower back pain, tight shoulders, stiff hips. It feels unexpected, but it is very common. Why This Happens After winter, the body is less conditioned than it feels. Then activity increases quickly. This leads to: Back pain after gardening or lifting Shoulder strain from reaching Sciatica flare ups Tight hips from walking more Tip: Sudden movement after a slower winter is a key trigger. Start slow. What Helps Build up gradually Start smaller than you think Warm up first Even a few minutes helps Keep moving Do not stop completely Release tension early Massage helps prevent small strains building Tip: If it lasts more than a few days, your body usually needs support, not just rest. If you are in SE23 or Forest Hill , get in touch to see how we can help. A Simple Reset Spring is a shift from rest to movement. Support your body now and it will move better throughout the season.

As winter fades, many expect energy to return quickly. But for many, the body still feels slow, posture has slipped and tension remains from months of reduced movement. March is the bridge between winter recovery and renewed energy.

Why the Body Feels Stiffer in Late Winter
By Karen Burke • January 8, 2026
By January, many people are technically “better” but still feel flat. Energy is low, muscles feel tight, sleep is unsettled and motivation has not quite returned. This is common after winter colds and viruses. The body has been busy defending itself and recovery takes longer than most people expect. Why You Still Feel Tired After a Cold Even when symptoms pass, the body may still be: holding muscle tension running on low energy recovering immune strength dealing with poor circulation catching up on rest This can show up as stiffness, heaviness or a general lack of drive. Tip: Feeling tired does not mean you are unfit or failing. It means your body is still healing. What Helps the Body Recover Properly Warmth supports healing Heat helps muscles relax and improves circulation, which supports recovery. Gentle movement restores flow Light stretching and walking help the body regain rhythm without strain. Bodywork supports circulation and lymph flow Massage and hands-on therapies help release tension and support natural detox processes. Rest plus reset works better than rest alone The body recovers best when relaxation is combined with circulation and warmth. Tip: Focus on neck, shoulders and lower back first. These areas often hold tension during illness. January Is About Rebuilding, Not Pushing January is not the time to force energy back. It is a month for restoring it gradually. At MindBody Therapy Centre in Forest Hill , January is always about helping the body recover, reset and regain balance after winter strain. A Gentle Reminder If your body still feels heavy, stiff or tired, it is not lagging behind. It is asking for the final stage of care.
